Bale Mountain Trek for 5 Days
Addis Ababa to Bale Mountains National Park
We will drive from Addis Ababa to Bale Mountains National Park, arriving at the park headquarters early enough in the afternoon for a leisurely hike.
We will hope to spot Menelik’s bushbuck and the Mountain nyala, the two endemic mammals that frequent the area. Birds in the area include; Blue-Winged goose, Spot-Breasted lapwing, Abyssinian long claw, Wattled Ibis, Black-headed Siskin, Rouget’s rail and numerous other species. Overnight camping near park entrance.
Trek to Sodota 6-7 hours of hiking
We walk through Dinsho and enter the park. In addition to the animals already listed, we may also see Ethiopian wolves. We will stop at Habera Waterfall for a nice break. Camp at Sodota.
Trek to Wasema 5-6 hours of hiking
We will be trekking through beautiful landscapes with stunning views. We will pass through Mararo Valley where the Lammergeyer and Verraux Eagles keep nests. Ethiopian wolves are also a possibility. Camp at Wasama.
Trek to Garba Gurracha 6-7 hours of hiking
Start the day by hiking up Mt. Wasema (4,200 meters) and then continue down into the Worgona Valley. Falcons, raptors and possibly the Ethiopian wolf will be visible. We will end the day at Lake Garba Gurracha, which means “Black Lake” in the Oromic language. Camp at Garba Gurracha.
Sanetti Plateau to Addis Ababa
We take a short trek up to the Sennati Plateau to meet our vehicles for the return trip to Addis Ababa. We enjoy dinner at a traditional Ethiopian restaurant featuring musicians and dancers from some of Ethiopia’s many ethnic groups.
